Localgiving.com Charity: Hurst Bowling Club
Since before 1747, Hurst Bowling Club has been an integral part of the local community in Berkshire. The community group are committed to preserving and supporting Bowling for members of the local community, especially older and infirm members who would otherwise endure social isolation.
The main obstacles faced by the club are the on-going need for the maintenance of the bowling green and the costly restoration of the club house. The steps that lead up to the club entrance and green prevent access for wheelchair users and there aren’t any indoor toilets, hot water or heating inside the club, which prohibits its use in the winter.
All of the work to keep the green, grounds and equipment and to administer the club is carried out by volunteers. After a recommendation from Berkshire Community Foundation, the group decided to join Localgiving.com and use their webpage to raise unrestricted funds online.
During the Localgiving.com Berkshire Match Fund, the group benefitted from double donations and the addition of Gift Aid. Hurst Bowling Club successfully raised £900 towards the cost of maintaining the club grounds. The group’s fundraising manager, Ronnie Ashley, said, “Thanks to Localgiving.com Match Fund we are able to repair the banks as this is an integral part of the green so that our members can continue to benefit from the game.” And that “the Berkshire Match Fund has alleviated much of our anxieties…the process was easy to follow and on the whole it was a trouble free experience.”
