THE BISHOP OF READING’S VISIT TO HURST BOWLING CLUB

On Wednesday August 15th 2012, we were pleased to entertain the Bishop of Reading, The Rt Revd Andrew J Proud. The Bishop had heard of Hurst Bowling Club's Thursday Community Project and wanted to leatn more abouit it.

The Berkshire Community’s Chief executive Officer, Andrew Middleton kindly agreed to facilitate the Bishop’s visit to our club.

Our community project runs throughout the bowling season. We accommodate two agencies; one cares for adults with additional needs and the other runs a befriending service for isolated lonely elderly people. We are currently in discussion with another agency which supports young adults with dementia.

The day of the Bishop’s visit began well, the weather was kind to us, but five minutes after his arrival we had a magnificent cloudburst. This gave us the opportunity for lots of conversation, cups of tea, cake and scones. We really got to know a number of people we had invited specially for the occasion.

After the rain stopped we were able to introduce to Bishop Andrew to the game of bowls. His very first wood moved the jack and we immediately offered to sign him up.

His enthusiasm for our project was evident. He applauded the energy of the group and how very alive it felt.

The Bishop has agreed to become patron of Hurst Bowls Club and we look forward to his visits.
